What is Magna Charta Universitatum?

Magna Carta Universitatum is an agreement that was signed on the 18th of September 1988 at the 900th anniversary of the University of Bologna. It was signed by 388 rectors in Europe and beyond. It contains principles of academic freedom and institutional autonomy as a guideline for good governance and self-understanding of universities in the future. To this day, the document has been signed by 816 universities from 86 different countries. The universities that sign the document accept that universities play an important role in the development of societies and aim to adjust their vision and strategies accordingly.
