International Student Societies Elect New Presidents

New international student leaders emerged on Friday 4th November 2016 as the International office of the Eastern Mediterranean University organized a peaceful, smooth, free and fair election. While declaring the results the International Office Coordinator, Mrs. Özgür T. Güler, only the Nigerian society presidential seat had two candidates as Jerry Sambe defeated his opponent Ibrahim Lawal with 217 votes to 162 votes. Also, the election of the Lebanon society was declared inconclusive as the candidate had 2 Yes, 2 No and one invalid vote.


The presidents of other societies were declared winners. They include Toghrul Abbasov, Azerbaijan, Achiri Emmanuel, Cameroon, Ahmed Muhammed, Egypt, Abdullah Atiq, India, Abdulrahman Zahid Morroco. Others are Usman Aziz, Pakistan, Sergey Grishechkin, Russia, Muhamed Yasin, Somalia, Afnan Bashir, Sudan, Amir Haj, Syria, Alibek Abdulkhamidov, Tajikistan, Yusuf Juma Ali, Tanzania, Muhabbat Rozmamedova Turkmenistan, Tariq Abdulrahman Yemen and Donald Mudowaya, Zimbabwe. However the Libyan candidate was rejected due to the election results.

Mrs. Güler urged the various presidents to be of good conduct throughout their stay in office and ensure they see their various positions as a call to service and a means of gathering experience for future positions.

Earlier before the commencement of voting the Vice Rector for International Affairs and Promotion Prof. Dr. Cem Tanova commended the various student bodies for their efforts and contributions towards the development of the University. He emphasized that as part of democracy it is important to be elected stating that it is also important to be fair in running the various organizations and societies. He said EMU looks forward to building and encouraging leaders that would listen to their constituencies. He said the University always has at the back of its mind the need to always provide a conducive environment for its students.


The candidates had earlier engaged in a manifesto session on Thursday 3rd November 2016 where they all promised to ensure a better administration. They promised to sustain a good and cordial relationship with the University to continue to move the University forward. They commended the University administration for the various facilities and provisions made to ensure the most adequate environment for teaching, learning and research. The election was coordinated by the Chief Assistant at the International Office, Amjad Taha with the corporation of other assistants at the International office.

However a make up election was done on Thursday 10th November 2016 for some international societies whose elections didn't hold or were inconclusive. Wagdi Kalifa emerged winner of the Libyan society beating three other contestants.  Other winners include Tshepo Mataung, South Africa, Mohamed Djamel, Algeria, Uulkan Usenalivea, Kyrgyzstan, Rabee Ghane, Lebanon and Chiwisial Lupula of Zambia
