On the occasion of the longest night of the year, our Iranian, Tajik, and Afghan students celebrated 'Yalda Night' together on 21 December 2017. For this celebration, Maziyar Fallahi, a famous Iranian singer was invited to EMU. He performed for 90 minutes for a crowd of more than 1200 of EMU students and some of their families. For the same purpose, Iranian Ambassador to Cyprus, Dr. Reza Zabib and the Iranian Embassy members were present.
In the opening speech delivered by our Rector, Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam, he highlighted the importance of cultural practice for EMU in her mission of nurturing Virtue, Knowledge, and Advancement among EMU students. He then referred to Yalda event and stated that he is more than pleased to see that all the students in EMU are happily sharing an important event from their culture with their friends from other nationalities. Then he referred to the act of sympathy extended by EMU to the Iranians in the mourn for the destructive earthquake happened in November in West of Iran. He stated that alongside with the 10.000 USD donated by EMU with the purpose of reconstructing the destructed region, EMU's Rector's Office has also granted a total of 8 Full (100%) Scholarships to applicants from the destructed regions to pursue undergraduate studies in Civil Engineering, Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation, Nursing, and Nutrition & Dietetics at EMU. EMU's Departments of Civil Engineering and Psychology have also offered to hold 2 short-term training workshops in the regions for resolving the after shock effects.
By the end, he handed the Donation money to the Iranian Ambassador in Cyprus to deliver to Iran's Red Crescent population. After that, the Iranian Ambassador, Dr. Reza Zabib opened his speech by appreciating all the support EMU has shown to the Iranian students. Afterwards, he appreciated Prof. Dr. Osam and Prof. Dr. Cem Tanova, Vice-Rector for International Relations and Promotion, for their continuous support to Iranian students and all their effort in holding Yalda Night celebration at EMU. He then thanked EMU's Rector's Office for their act of sympathy and their donation for the Earthquake in Iran.
In the same event, Prof. Dr. Osam gave a Plate in appreciation of Mr. Bagheri, the ex-Consul of Iranian Embassy whose mission finished on 21 December 2017. After receiving his award, Mr. Bagheri thanked EMU's Rector's Office for all the support extended to Iranian students and stated that during his 2 years of mission, he witnessed all the efforts EMU has done to provide all Iranian students with all kinds of services in order not to feel far from their homeland.
